 History

Overview Koltes Lumber was founded in 1881, by Michael Koltes, in Waunakee, Wisconsin. Michael's son, Joe, joined the business in 1883 when it became known as Michael Koltes and Son. Joe's sons Harry and Gar joined the business in 1907 and 1920 respectively. The two younger Kolteses managed the business until 1940 when they bought it from their father. Harry and Gar opened branches of the Koltes Lumber Company in Sun Prairie, Mazomanie, Belleville, south Madison, Stoughton, and Lodi during the late 1930s and early 1940s. These stores, with the exception of the Lodi location, were phased out and sold in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In 1958 Harry's son, Joe, joined his father and uncle Gar in the business. He became president of the Koltes Lumber Company in 1967.
Lodi J.H. Koltes Lumber Company was opened for business, by Harry and Gar Koltes in 1932 on the east side of downtown Lodi. In the spring of 1935 the company bought a larger building on the corner of present day State Highways 113 and 60 in downtown Lodi. The business remained at that location for 52 years. Koltes Do-It Center was built in 1987 at it's current location west of Lodi on State Highway 113.
Present Today the business consists of a hardware store and lumber yard, which serves the homeowner and the professional contractor. The store carries a full line of building materials. There is an interior design department to help with your projects. Estimates are done free of charge, and many more products and services are available.
